What is utility locating and why is it important?
Utility locating is the process of identifying and mapping underground utilities such as gas lines, water pipes, electrical cables, and communication lines before excavation or construction begins. This service is critical to prevent accidental damage, which can cause costly repairs, service interruptions, safety hazards, and legal liabilities. Accurate locating helps protect workers and the public while ensuring projects proceed smoothly.
It’s best to schedule utility locating as soon as you know excavation or construction will begin. Ideally, this should be at least a few days in advance to allow for proper planning and scheduling. Early locating helps avoid project delays and ensures safety protocols are followed.
While many locating technologies are effective, some utilities, especially non-metallic ones like plastic water or sewer pipes, can be more challenging to detect. Combining different technologies such as GPR and electromagnetic locators improves detection rates, but no method is 100% foolproof.
